Before the Civil Rights era, a good percentage of African-Americans voted (for the ones that could vote)Republican. Right after this era, we mainly vote the Democratic ticket. It took something as earth-shattering as the Civil Rights movement for us to see things from a different perspective. Will this always have to be the case?
Towards the end of the Great Depression, farmers had a choice: either keep their old, faithful horse, or get a tractor. Many of them chose the tractor and "retired" the horse. Their production increased, and they were able to pull out of a troubled life. For those who kept their horse, they either went bankrupt, and/or had sell the farm.
So, if you still wish to vote like Grandma, consider the fact that she lived in a different day than you. Look at ALL the issues, listen and debate various points of view with friends/family/co-workers and vote.
If you want to continue to ride the "donkey", that is your choice. Just know that there are other "up to date", more efficient vehicles out there as well.
