No “but’s” with this
I talked about in the past just how tired I am to read newspaper after newspaper after magazine, after news program, etc. on the disparity of black folk in society (”blacks have met success, BUT are 10 times more likely..blah, blah, blah). Now if the disparity stories are true, then we should talk about them constructively. At the same time we need to balance these stories on what we ARE DOING RIGHT. The high achievement of black boys in education will be celebrated by parents, children, academics and speakers at a London conference this weekend to showcase the positive things that black boys can do.
Over a thousand people are expected to attend the Raising Aspirations and Achievement conference being held at the Emmanuel Conference Centre in Westminster on Saturday.
…Cheron Byfield, Chairperson of the National Black Boys Can Association told Black Britain that the conference is the first of its kind in the United Kingdom.
She said events such as this one are “absolutely crucial†to recognising the positive work done by black boys and their parents and counteracting the negative image projected in the media about the underachievement of black boys.
Adding that “a number of our boys are doing very wellâ€Â, Ms Byfield said: “There is always publicity about black boys underachieving; [it’s] all the negative things about black boys; the press is just littered with that.
“Our awards ceremony is about saying, amidst all of that, there are black boys who are achieving.â€Â
She added: “We want to turn the tide so that the nation begins to recognise that black boys are more than capable and that they are doing well.†(more…)
