Introducing a new website to the BlackInformant.com family

January 30th, 2006 Posted in Uncategorized

Website name: The Afro Informant
URL: http://international.blackinformant.com

As you know, news is happening all around us. As an American citizen I have noticed that when it comes to news from the African Diaspora, we here in the states oftentimes tend to shy away from this information largely because we are not as familiar with these other cultures as we should be. The goal of this site is to A. inform readers of current news around the African Diaspora, and B. to aid in the understanding of this news by providing additional information (commentaries/analysis) and history behind the news. Topics such as cultural traditions, music, etc. will also be discussed here. Bloggers within these various cultures will be highlighted here as well.

As of right now, I am looking at regular updates to The Afro Informant at least 3 days a week.

One of the main reasons why I decided to create this site is because as a black American, I have grown tired of my unfamiliarity of African-based cultures outside my own. This site serves as a reflection of my personal quest to better understand the main ingredient of my cultural makeup.

Following the same philosophy of BlackInformant.com, The Afro Informant will not be site inundated with up to the minute news. I explained the reasoning behind the BlackInformant.com philosophy in the FAQ section of this site:

Q: Why do you keep certain postings up longer than others?

A: I do this for one of two reasons–either its because I could not find anything to post under that topic for the day, or (what is the reason about 97% of the time) its because I feel that it is a topic of the utmost importance and I simply cannot bury the issue with other news and issues. Just recently I read that the average American spends roughly 8 hours a day consuming some type of media. It is in this environment that important issues that need closer inspection by the we the public have been reduced to slight impulses that have been packaged to target our emotions more than our brain. Issues that may require days or even weeks to comprehend and fully understand are today being pushed into clips where emotionally-based opinions are being formed everyday. In my own way I hope to counter this unfortunate trend in this corner of cyberspace.

Over the next few days I will be making some modifications (adding links to blogs and other resources, etc. ) to The Afro Informant.

There is another addition to the BlackInformant.com family that I will be developing in the future, so stay tuned!!
