Darla Montgomery has raised the bar in local TV. At 43, the petite African-American news veteran, who still looks like she’s barely 30, has commanded a salary higher than any female news anchor before her. (more…)

On Rebuilding New Orleans

March 21st, 2006 | 6 Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

A CNN poll today reminded me of something I had thought about a while ago:

“Should homeowners be allowed to rebuild in flood-prone areas of New Orleans?”

At the time of this post, 72% say no while the remaining (28%) says yes.

When this issue first came up, my initial reaction was “no” because it would legitmize the endless pork spending on folks who continue to build in areas they know are prone to disaster. If they take full responsibility of all damages, then in that case let them rebuild. I still feel that way. More »

Cuba: Poor people’s paradise

March 21st, 2006 | 7 Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

First, the news…

HAVANA, March 20 (Reuters) - Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan is visiting communist Cuba to learn about disaster relief, a visit prompted by the failure of the U.S. government to cope with Hurricane Katrina, he said on Monday.
The controversial Nation of Islam leader, who is visiting Cuba for a week, criticized Washington for refusing a Cuban offer to send doctors after Katrina devastated New Orleans last August, flooding neighborhoods mainly populated by blacks and the impoverished. More »

“Plight” or bad choices?

March 21st, 2006 | 6 Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

Shay Reily of BookerRising comments on a recent article in the New York Times that suggests that the plight of African-American men has worsened despite the gains of other groups:
“Let us not forget the how-not-to-be-poor-in-America formula put forth by black libertarian economist Walter Williams: graduate from high school, don’t have children before marriage, stay away from drugs, stay out of jail, and have a decent work ethic. While it is mentioned, what I don’t see enough in this article is much more discussion of bad life choices made by some black men - and more specifically, by their parents - that are responsible for their predicament in the first place.” (more frm Shay)

The Flat Tax

March 21st, 2006 | 5 Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

“The experiment started in a small way in 1994, when Estonia became the first country in Europe to introduce a “flat tax” on personal and corporate income. Income is taxed at a single uniform rate of 26%: no schedule of rates, no deductions. The economy has flourished. Others followed: first, Latvia and Lithuania, Estonia’s Baltic neighbours; later Russia (with a rate of 13% on personal income), then Slovakia (19% on personal and corporate income). One of Poland’s centre-right opposition parties is campaigning for a similar code (with a rate of 15%). So far eight countries have followed Estonia’s example (see article). An old idea that for decades elicited the response, “Fine in theory, just not practical in the real world,” seems to be working as well in practice as it does on the blackboard.” (more…)

Why should a person become a Christian?

March 19th, 2006 | 18 Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

For all you regular (and irregular) churchgoers out there, this question is for you. With issues such as divorce, teen pregnancy, and other things considered “ungodly” in the Christian world yet have become permanent fixtures on the American Christian landscape, why should one consider becoming a Christian?

Better yet, why continue to go to church?

Why you cannot believe every “study”

March 19th, 2006 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - From 1994 to 2003, medical research funded by pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies steadily increased and now surpasses research funded by government or public sources, according to a review of the most frequently cited studies.
These findings raise concerns that “academics may be losing control of the clinical research agenda,” senior author Dr. John P. A. Ioannidis, from the University of Ioannina School of Medicine in Greece, and colleagues note. However, “government and the public sector still make major contributions to academic research, despite the rapid increase in industry sponsorship in areas such as randomized controlled trials.” (more…)

So poor, so black, so… ignorant and helpless?

March 18th, 2006 | 6 Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

I tend to stay away from political stories on the weekend, but this particular issue has been on the coals for a good while now.

First the news…

“The Justice Department approved plans yesterday for the first New Orleans election since Hurricane Katrina, despite objections from civil rights groups who said the voting arrangements do not adequately accommodate the city’s displaced black voters.
The storm has tilted the racial balance of city residents in favor of whites, many believe, and controversy has surrounded the question of what kind of accommodations should be made to allow the tens of thousands of black evacuees to vote from outside the state. More »

Stunned, shocked and appalled are American educators as they study the recent report from the National Center of Education Statistics, which reveals that only 31 percent of college graduates can read a complex book and extrapolate from it. “It’s really astounding,” said Michael Gorman, president of the American Library Association. “That’s not saying much for the remainder,” he added, meaning that 69 percent of our college graduates cannot read at or above a “proficient” level. Fluoride and drinking water

Fluoridation of our water is “dangerous unscientific nonsense”
98% of Europe is now free of fluoridated water

The Green Party have slated controversial plans to fluoridate water supplies, claiming that there are many significant questions over fluoride’s safety and effectiveness.
Following government bidding, health chiefs around the country are currently deciding whether to adopt fluoridation as their preferred route to reducing tooth decay in children - a move described as “dangerously unscientific nonsense” by fluoride’s opponents. More »

Black on Black Racism?

March 16th, 2006 | 9 Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

If you have the time today, please read George Curry’s editorial entitled “New Orleans Black on Black Racism” (user: thedist@rere.net / pass: 4C6U48). Here is an excerpt:

===

Six months after Hurricane Katrina, some public officials in New Orleans are waving a “Keep Out” sign in front of some of its poorest residents. In many instances, the culprits are Black. If some of the statements made by New Orleans City Council President Oliver Thomas, an African American, had been uttered by a White person, he or she would have been lambasted as a racist. More »

Com’on y’all!

A FEW YEARS AGO, a sterile Wells Fargo branch in southwest Los Angeles got some soul. Bland white walls were painted vivid red and African sunset yellow. A nondescript carpet was ripped up and replaced with an earthy brown zebra-striped rug. Framed and matted swaths of African kente cloth were hung on the walls; a mural of Buffalo soldiers was painted behind the tellers.

The transformation, completed in 2004, illustrates Wells Fargo’s ongoing effort to tap the fast-growing African-American business market. Like many financial firms, including Merrill Lynch and Bank of America, Wells Fargo has been studying statistics More »

“Gangsta-rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube served as the show’s co-executive producer, in addition to writing its theme song, “Race Card.” R.J. Cutler, who made the groundbreaking 1993 documentary “The War Room,” a behind-the-scenes look at Bill Clinton’s first presidential campaign, is the one who developed the idea. Cutler hesitates to call the film a documentary, but he has also taken great pains to distance the series from the much maligned and wholly More »
