Darla Montgomery has raised the bar in local TV. At 43, the petite African-American news veteran, who still looks like she’s barely 30, has commanded a salary higher than any female news anchor before her. (more…)

A CNN poll today reminded me of something I had thought about a while ago:
“Should homeowners be allowed to rebuild in flood-prone areas of New Orleans?”
At the time of this post, 72% say no while the remaining (28%) says yes.
When this issue first came up, my initial reaction was “no” because it would legitmize the endless pork spending on folks who continue to build in areas they know are prone to disaster. If they take full responsibility of all damages, then in that case let them rebuild. I still feel that way. Read more »

First, the news…
HAVANA, March 20 (Reuters) - Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan is visiting communist Cuba to learn about disaster relief, a visit prompted by the failure of the U.S. government to cope with Hurricane Katrina, he said on Monday.
The controversial Nation of Islam leader, who is visiting Cuba for a week, criticized Washington for refusing a Cuban offer to send doctors after Katrina devastated New Orleans last August, flooding neighborhoods mainly populated by blacks and the impoverished. Read more »

Shay Reily of BookerRising comments on a recent article in the New York Times that suggests that the plight of African-American men has worsened despite the gains of other groups:
“Let us not forget the how-not-to-be-poor-in-America formula put forth by black libertarian economist Walter Williams: graduate from high school, don’t have children before marriage, stay away from drugs, stay out of jail, and have a decent work ethic. While it is mentioned, what I don’t see enough in this article is much more discussion of bad life choices made by some black men - and more specifically, by their parents - that are responsible for their predicament in the first place.” (more frm Shay)

“The experiment started in a small way in 1994, when Estonia became the first country in Europe to introduce a “flat tax†on personal and corporate income. Income is taxed at a single uniform rate of 26%: no schedule of rates, no deductions. The economy has flourished. Others followed: first, Latvia and Lithuania, Estonia’s Baltic neighbours; later Russia (with a rate of 13% on personal income), then Slovakia (19% on personal and corporate income). One of Poland’s centre-right opposition parties is campaigning for a similar code (with a rate of 15%). So far eight countries have followed Estonia’s example (see article). An old idea that for decades elicited the response, “Fine in theory, just not practical in the real world,†seems to be working as well in practice as it does on the blackboard.” (more…)

For all you regular (and irregular) churchgoers out there, this question is for you. With issues such as divorce, teen pregnancy, and other things considered “ungodly” in the Christian world yet have become permanent fixtures on the American Christian landscape, why should one consider becoming a Christian?
Better yet, why continue to go to church?

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - From 1994 to 2003, medical research funded by pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies steadily increased and now surpasses research funded by government or public sources, according to a review of the most frequently cited studies.
These findings raise concerns that “academics may be losing control of the clinical research agenda,” senior author Dr. John P. A. Ioannidis, from the University of Ioannina School of Medicine in Greece, and colleagues note. However, “government and the public sector still make major contributions to academic research, despite the rapid increase in industry sponsorship in areas such as randomized controlled trials.” (more…)
