Some of the “minor” details left out of this summer’s illegal immigration protests
Living here in California, I have a front-row seat to the whole issue of illegal immigration and how it can affect a community. So it is hard for me to just simply “move on” and away from this issue to talk about more pressing issues like the JonBenet Ramsey case — whatever!
Here is an article I came across recently that paints quite a different picture of the economic structure in South America than what many in the pro-ILLEGAL immigration movement have been preaching.

Mexico’s Rich Don’t Like To Pay Taxes – They Think You Should - Brenda Walker
written in 2003
“Poor Mexico, so far from God, so close to the United States” is an early example of the now-familiar annoying whine, first voiced by Mexican President Porfirio Diaz .
Pathetic loser, mooch, social basket case, criminal narco-state: these are Americans’ mental pictures of Mexico.
But more than any other, the image is one of staggering poverty. Anyone who has been to a Mexican border town is immediately overwhelmed by the Third World - the oppressive dirt, decay, too many underfed children.
However, the truth is that Mexico is a very wealthy country. It is blessed with abundant natural resources and a fortunate location. Mexico is the richest nation in Latin America when measured by GDP, and by a wide margin: in 2001, Mexico’s GDP was the highest in Latin America, a substantial 22.5 percent more than runner-up Brazil. When GDP per capita is the gauge, Mexico is second only behind Argentina.
Half of all Latin American billionaires, 11 out of 22, are Mexicans.
Mexico is the quintessential banana republicâ€â€a corrupt oligarchy of arrogant rich, a tiny middle class and millions of poor people, around half of whom live in poverty.
But Mexico is not poor overall. It has the resources to improve itself.

Mother to face jail for refusal to handover child to illegal immigrant
Mother to make statement at Summit County Juvenile Court at 12:30 p.m. today
Akron, OH (August 31, 2006) - An Akron resident and mother of a 12-year-old son has decided to face jail rather than hand over her child to her former spouse, an illegal alien from Nigeria whom she left because of domestic violence.
Jinida Doba, 35, was ordered by Summit County Juvenile Court Judge Linda Teodosio to hand over the child to his father at 12:30 p.m. today at the court - despite the fact that the father is illegal, was issued a voluntary departure order five years ago, was recently detained by immigration and faces imminent deportation.
Doba will appear at the court this afternoon, but without her son.
“I will go to jail before I willingly handover my child to a man who has for years tormented us with physical abuse, violence and intimidation. Not to mention he’s in this country illegally with an expired work authorization card,†Ms. Doba said. “There’s a reason I fled from him with our child six years ago. My son is starting to make sense of all that’s happened over the years, and has told me that he does not want to return with his father.â€Â
Doba has been trying for the past three years to regain custody of her son after her former husband Ishaya Pierre Doba kept the child from her in Tennessee after an extended visit. The father refused to return the child to his mother and law enforcement in Tennessee refused to intervene when the mother traveled to the state with her Ohio custody order. Mr. Doba kept the child long enough to establish residency and have the case transferred to Tennessee.
Despite testimony of abuse, that he threatened to have the mother killed, that he took their son for a passport photo to add to his own Nigerian passport, and that he took it upon himself to keep a child away from his mother, the Tennessee court awarded the father custody in July of 2004.
“I was dumfounded,†Ms. Doba said about her reaction to the verdict. “If you were to read the order, you would think I didn’t even show up in court. The order makes no mention of mine or my witnesses’ testimony.
“Oddly, however, the judge acknowledged his illegal status, but only noted that the father ‘has no plans’ to leave the United States. Of course he doesn’t want to leave, but he has been ordered to leave.â€Â
Ms. Doba and her son are U.S. citizens. The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed that when Mr. Doba is eventually deported, it has no power to keep him from leaving the country with her son.
“Ishaya Pierre Doba has no status in the United States and has acquired an unlawful presence,†wrote a Homeland Security official in a letter to Congressman Sherrod Brown, whom Ms. Doba has contacted for assistance in this matter. “If he departs from the United States however and his son accompanies him, there is no means by which Immigration and Customs Enforcement could stop his son from traveling with him.â€Â
Ms. Doba said she has exhausted all efforts through the legal system to win back her son. She has hired attorneys in Ohio and Tennessee, and her petition for custody has been pending in Tennessee without a court date since February of 2005.
“This case is a clear example of the fatal flaws of our immigration laws in this country. I will do everything I can to call for changes in our policies at least where immigrant status is concerned in child custody matters,†she said. “No illegal alien should be awarded custody when the other parent is a natural-born U.S. citizen unless that parent is proven to be unfit. In my case, I have not.â€Â
