Speak against the Cuban government, get 17 years in prision

April 24th, 2007 | 2 Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

Well at least they have free medical care, right?

Except for this guy.

(cubanet.org) HAVANA - A veteran dissident leader who wrote a book about Cuban prison conditions while behind bars was freed over the weekend after serving his entire 17-year sentence, rights groups said Monday.

Jorge Luis Garcia Perez, widely known by the nickname “Antunez,” was released Sunday morning from prison in the central province of Villa Clara, the opposition group Bitacora Cubana said in a statement.

Originally arrested on charges of engaging in enemy propaganda and attempted sabotage in 1990, Garcia Perez was among the prisoners Pope John Paul II had asked the government to release. But he was not among the 14 people the Cuban government said it had freed in conjunction with the January 1998 papal visit.

[…]

In Havana, another rights group confirmed Garcia Perez’s release even as it reported a new case of a dissident attorney sentenced after a secret trial to 12 years in prison for painting graffiti and distributing pamphlets with an anti-government message. (more…)

Documentary on Blacks on Wall St.

(eurweb.com) A documentary is in the works about African Americans who have made substantial contributions on Wall Street. Titled “Wall Street In the Black,” the film by Drunia M. Duvivier aims to serve as inspiration for a generation of black youth.

“I was inspired by the extraordinary African American men and women I encountered,” Duvivier, who began her career at Morgan Stanley, told Black Enterprise. “I realized it was an important story to tell. I want young African Americans to see this film and see this whole other world of possibilities.” (more…)

Project Band-Aid

April 24th, 2007 | 7 Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

That is what I am calling the latest campaign organized by both the NAACP and the HSAN to bleep out certain words within hip hop music when they are broadcasted on the airwaves. (read what I just said again and let that sink in)

What happens when someone purchases the album? Or how about the “uncensored” video?

(tvweek.com) Upset about the way African Americans and especially women are portrayed in music and music videos, the NAACP is unveiling a campaign to get cable TV, radio and music companies and recording artists to “stop demeaning African American images in the media.”

[…]

Stefanie Brown, national director of the NAACP’s Youth & College Division, said the yearlong campaign will attempt to work with artists, recording companies and the media. She said the portrayal of women in rap music was a big target, suggesting they “objectivize” and demean women.

Mr. Hayes said the NAACP wasn’t blasting media companies because it hopes to work with them and with artists. NAACP wants the artists, record companies and media companies to pledge to do a better job of portraying African Americans. (source)

#

(myhot105.com) In a joint statement, rap mogul Russell Simmons and Benjamin Chavis of the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network said the group of business and community leaders is concerned about the growing outrage over the use of offensive words by both musical performers and on-air personalities.

“We recommend that the recording and broadcast industries voluntarily remove/bleep/delete the misogynistic words ‘bit**’ and ‘ho’ and the racially offensive word ‘ni**er,’” they said.

“Going forward, these three words should be considered with the same objections to obscenity as ‘extreme curse words.’”

The two said the recommendation wasn’t about censorship.

“Our discussions are about the corporate social responsibility of the industry to voluntarily show respect to African-Americans and other people of color, African-American women and to all women in lyrics and images,” they said. (more…)

Translation: “Whitey, we are asking you to censor our demeaning behavior. Because if we were to FULLY admit that we are the originators of this material, we will not be able to hold perpetual guilt over you.”

This whole thing has taken a very sickening turn. As I have said many times before, while we regularly boast in our ability to tell it like it is, when it comes to confronting the dark side of hip hop we cannot accept blame unless Whites are portrayed as EQUAL co-conspirators. That is the equivalent of a grown, rusty, dusty behind man stating in court “Well, he made me do it”.

I say, let’s put the moniker of “strong Black man” or “strong Black woman” to the test. If we are serious that we want to rid the airwaves of “offensive” music, let’s stop listening to it (that includes legal and illegal copies of these CDs)! And please don’t bring up the partial statistic about how more Whites than Blacks listen to hip hop music. Of course they do because we only make up 13% of the population. Do you really believe that our kids are listening classical music instead? Of course not! Our lil’ 13% is right smack in the middle of the listening audience. If we are going to be real about this issue, then let’s boycott any radio station that plays this type of music or stores (INCLUDING ONLINE MUSIC STORES) that sell this music. How about stop going to concerts where this type of behavior is glamorized? Or how about comedy shows where the same ills of Black America we consistently and angrily blame White America for becomes bust–yo–gut, roll on the floor, holla’n material? The sad reality is that many of us lack the real guts and courage our parents and grandparents had when they boycotted against White establishments during the civil rights era. They were willing to face police dogs and fire hoses while this generation begs the White establishment to help US to stop demeaning ourselves.

[exhale]

I think what really sets me off about this issue is that I know that there are many of you out there who agree with what I am saying here, but you prefer to be a fence sitter on the issue–lest you are accused of “beating up on your race”. So in your conversations on and offline you say just enough to stay “safe”. Occasionally you may chime in related conversations by admitting that we as Black folks have been wrong for falling asleep at the wheel when it comes to our kids. But you quickly have to follow it with a jab at the White man, lest you sound like the “heartless” Bill Cosby. Having worked with at-risk kids for a number of years, the one thing they appreciate is when grown folks like me would tell them the truth STRAIGHT UP! They did not want a social commentator–they wanted someone that not only love them enough to tell them the truth, but will show them how they can become better human beings. One of the worst things we could do for our kids in this situation is to lead them to “whitey” for a demonstration on how to censor OUR behavior. This is EXACTLY what both the NAACP and HSAN are doing with this latest campaign.

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - The number of overweight people in Europe is rising and there is an especially worrying trend of increasing childhood obesity and in the number of people who are grossly obese, according to recent studies.

Europe is facing major health and social burdens and the rise in obesity is reaching “epidemic” proportions, the 15th European Congress on Obesity in Budapest was told on Sunday.

Estimates show there are around 1.1 billion overweight people in the world, of whom 312 million are obese, and that in Europe 10-20 percent of men are obese and almost half the population is overweight. (more…)

Nagin’s foot in mouth disease

April 23rd, 2007 | 2 Comments | Posted in Uncategorized
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin criticized the cleanliness of Philadelphia after a visit to the city last week. On Sunday, he apologized for his remarks.

“Let me tell you something. You ought to go to Philly and you will appreciate how clean New Orleans is,” Nagin said Saturday to a crowd of New Orleans residents concerned about the city’s recovery from Hurricane Katrina.

“Just go and walk around Philly a little bit and you will appreciate,” Nagin said. ” … We still have some work to do but we definitely beat them by a long shot.” (more..)

  • [CHECK]

  • The usage of the N-word.

“Culture of corruption” revisited

April 23rd, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized
(blogs.abcnews.com) The campaign coffers of the new Democratic House committee chairmen have seen a big jump in contributions from lobbyists and special interests since the Democratic takeover of Congress, according to new campaign finance filings available on PoliticalMoneyLine.com.

In some cases, Democrats in powerful posts are raising more money from special interest groups than the Republicans they replaced.

Campaign finance experts say that special interests have been contributing mostly to Republicans over the last 12 years of GOP rule on Capitol Hill. Now they are having to making quick friends with Democratic leaders. (more…)

Motivations and sex

The Naked Truth About Sex
By Lakita Garth
Found on cbn.com
(excerpted)

Before my wedding I was asked to speak to the football team at my alma mater, the University of Southern California, on the topic of sexual abstinence. I was a cheerleader at my university, and I counted it a privilege to be invited to address my team (who happened to be national champions!) during a chapel service. I jumped in feet first on the topic of sex.

As I talked with the football players, I heard answers and comments that I hadn’t anticipated. They were far more mature and took the subject of abstinence a lot more seriously than I had expected. When I asked whether or not sex was uncontrollable, one young man responded, “There are few things that are uncontrollable to a disciplined man.” I wanted to bow down and kiss his feet and wipe his cleats with my hair—but I abstained. The entire team agreed that having sex is a matter of choice—sometimes a very hard one—a choice under your complete control.

I asked the No. 1 college football team in the nation if they thought Kobe was able to control himself and if they could control themselves if they were offered a huge sum of money. (read more)

More Christians are murdered by Muslims

April 22nd, 2007 | 4 Comments | Posted in Uncategorized
ISTANBUL (BP)–In a gruesome assault against Turkey’s tiny Christian community, five young Muslim Turks entered a Christian publishing office in the southeastern province of Malatya April 18 and slit the throats of the three Protestant Christians present.

Two of the victims, Necati Aydin, 36, and Ugur Yuksel, 32, were Turkish converts from Islam. The third man, Tilmann Geske, 46, was a German citizen.

The Turkish press reported that four of the five young men, all 19 to 20 years of age, admitted during initial interrogations that they were motivated by both “nationalist and religious feelings.”

“We did this for our country,” an identical note in the pockets of all five young men read, Channel D television station reported. “They are attacking our religion.”

According to the Hurriyet newspaper, one of the suspects declared during police questioning, “We didn’t do this for ourselves. We did it for our religion. May this be a lesson to the enemies of religion.” (more…)

Some additional details

“He had scores of knife cuts on his thighs, his testicles, his rectum, and his back,” Ugras said. “His fingers were sliced to the bone.

“It is obvious that these wounds had been inflicted to torture him,” he said. (source)

Once again, where are all the global protests by Christians and were are the apologies from the Muslim community?

Interracial Marriages Surge Across U.S.

(wtopnews.com) Since that landmark Loving v. Virginia ruling, the number of interracial marriages has soared; for example, black-white marriages increased from 65,000 in 1970 to 422,000 in 2005, according to Census Bureau figures. Factoring in all racial combinations, Stanford University sociologist Michael Rosenfeld calculates that more than 7 percent of America’s 59 million married couples in 2005 were interracial, compared to less than 2 percent in 1970.

Coupled with a steady flow of immigrants from all parts of the world, the surge of interracial marriages and multiracial children is producing a 21st century America more diverse than ever, with the potential to become less stratified by race.

“The racial divide in the U.S. is a fundamental divide. … but when you have the ‘other’ in your own family, it’s hard to think of them as ‘other’ anymore,” Rosenfeld said. “We see a blurring of the old lines, and that has to be a good thing, because the lines were artificial in the first place.” (more…)

This reminds me of something that director Spike Lee said a few years ago:

During the promotion of his film Jungle Fever, about a black/white interracial romance, the black filmmaker stated that he disliked interrac[ial]; couples! Incredibly, he said, “I give interracial couples a look. Daggers. They get uncomfortable when they see me on the street.” (source)

Now right about now some of you are thinking that I am about to slam Spike Lee for saying what he did regarding interracial marriages. While I do condemn the statement, I do have some respect for him showing some real honesty about his opinion. While it has become easy for us to bring up the days of young Emmett till and how he was killed for allegedly whistling at a White woman by a bunch of racists, confronting the same racist demons in our own circles are repeatedly justified.

For numbers of us, seeing a White woman clasp the hand of a fellow Black brotha with kids in tow or a White man giving his brown shuga a peck on the cheek really makes your skin crawl (This is the point when some readers will remind me that Whites are just as bad by bringing up various experiences—let’s be real adults here and stop using Whites as a deflection. Let me also remind you that if this does not apply to you, then there is no need to comment). For some of you, Whites marrying Blacks is a sign that “THEY” are removing our leverage of perpetual guilt over them. You may not like reading this, but oh well, I’m in it now.

Dictionary.com does a pretty good job defining this type of person:

“a person who is utterly intolerant of any differing creed, belief, or opinion.”

The word is called “bigot“.

And we all know that there is nothing worse than a closet bigot. Something to think about while many of you are rushing to church tomorrow.

–A lil’ lesson yours truly had to learn years ago.

Is the Hummer more environmentally friendly that the Prius?

(icwales.icnetwork.co.uk) A DEBATE on the future of electric-hybrid cars like the Toyota Prius is raging after US researchers claimed that their green credentials may not add up.

Gas-guzzling cars such as the Hummer may actually be more environmentally-friendly than the Prius, the surprising research claimed.

[…]

The debate was sparked by researchers for CNW Marketing in the USA, who said Hummers, the big military-style cars beloved of rappers, scored better than the Prius in terms of carbon cost.

[…]

The researchers have pointed out that the nickel used in the Prius battery has to be shipped half-way around the world to Swansea and back again to be refined.

They also suggested the Prius only does an average of up to a third of the mileage throughout its life, than could be expected from its less fuel-efficient competitor.

The findings have been disputed by Toyota. Welsh environmentalists last night also expressed scepticism about the findings.

Julian Rosser, director of Friends of the Earth Cymru, said, “The most important thing for people to consider when choosing a new car is to get one as efficient as possible.

“We’re putting a huge amount of CO2 in the air and car transport is an increasing part of that picture.”

He added, “I’m a bit tired of getting accosted by people who read things in the papers and what they will remember for the rest of their life is that an inefficient car is better than an efficient one.”

Researchers counted the nickel content of the battery as one of the Prius’s biggest concerns. Mined in Canada, where local environmentalists are concerned about the process’s ecological impact, the 1,000 tonnes a year of smelted metal is then taken on a 10,000-mile journey by tanker and diesel train.

First it arrives in Wales to be refined, then it is shipped to China where it is turned into “nickel foam”, and from there it is sent to Japan where the batteries are made, before being shipped back in cars to the UK, the US or any of the car’s other markets.

The study suggested such a factor was part of a wider environmental footprint that showed the Hummer coming out better than the Prius.

According to their figures, the Hummer H3 is expected to do an average 300,000 miles through its driving life, while the Prius is expected to last just 100,000 miles. (more…)

Now I have read some of the criticisms surrounding this report, but I have yet to hear ONE of those critics prove that the effort and waste (as described in the report) it takes to manufacture a Prius is inaccurate.

The one thing that I was not aware of was the short expected lifespan of the Prius (@100k). We used to own one until the unfortunate day in March ‘06 when a car totaled it.

A GREAT video blog: My Urban Report

April 21st, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

As I was going through some of the links to BlackInformant.com this morning, I came across a site that I believe I saw before, but never took the time to really go through it. Being that I had a little downtime on this cool Saturday morning in So. California, I decided to chill for a little bit in the world of Amani (the Urban Reporter).

To sum it up, I was VERY impressed with his work. From what I was able to gather, this brotha used to be a reporter for a local news outlet in the Tampa area. His professional skills continue to shine in his self-produced video podcasts covering current events. The one video that really touched me was his account of the emotional roller coaster journey he and his wife were on a little over a year ago regarding their loss of two beautiful twin boys at birth.

From the little that I saw this morning, My Urban Report is one site that I will be checking out on a regular basis as yet another alternative source to get news.

I just finished cleaning a bunch of dead links from my blogroll and he is definitely going to be added here.

Great work!!

Like many folks out there, I watched the 2-day grilling of hip-hop on the Oprah show. It was the latter part of day 2 of this special where it entered into a “kum ba yah” moment as loose commitments to address the sexist and stereotypical culture of hip hop as a united front were made. If the following article is any indicator of the level of seriousness the hip hop industry is treating this issue, watching paint dry would probably be a better use of your time.

(suntimes.com) NEW YORK — In the wake of Don Imus’ firing for his on-air slur about the Rutgers women’s basketball team, a high-powered group of music-industry executives met privately Wednesday to discuss sexist rap lyrics.

During the furor that led to Imus’ fall last week from his talk-radio perch, many of his critics carped as well about offensive language in rap music.

The meeting, called by hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons’ Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, was held at the New York home of Lyor Cohen, chairman and chief executive of U.S. music at Warner Music Group.

But the summit, which lasted several hours, did not result in any specific initiative.

Organizers billed the gathering as a forum to ”discuss issues challenging the industry in the wake of controversy surrounding hip-hop and the First Amendment.”

Afterward, they planned to hold a news conference at a Manhattan hotel to discuss ”initiatives agreed upon at the meeting.” But by early afternoon, the news conference was postponed, because the meeting was still going on.

After the meeting ended, it was unclear whether there would be another one. Simmons’ publicist released a short statement that described the topic as a ”complex issue that involves gender, race, culture and artistic expression. Everyone assembled today takes this issue very seriously.” (more…)

(Emphasis added)

Remember, it took the actions of ONE White man to get folks this upset on such a large scale to address these issues.

Which store is better: Costco or Sams?

(consumerreports.com) Gallon jars of mayonnaise and 30-roll packs of toilet paper have made warehouse clubs seem appropriate mainly for platoon-size families focused on staples. But if you haven’t joined, you could be missing out on a widening range of choices. Today’s clubs not only stock some smaller sizes but also sell a wider range of services and more luxury products. And as always, there are no sweaty palms when you pay: The deals are great, day in and day out.

The nation’s biggest clubs, Costco and Sam’s Club, with 95 million cardholders between them, might seem like clones. But there are differences that can guide your choice if you haven’t joined, or lead you to switch clubs. To determine which one deserves your membership ($40 to $100 a year), we shopped at both, compared their prices with those charged by competitors, interviewed experts, and reviewed data from readers surveyed by the Consumer Reports National Research Center. Funeral director awaits his “big payback”

April 20th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

(postchronicle.com) Late funk legend James Brown’s estate owes $70,000 in funeral costs.

The C.A. Reid Funeral Home in Augusta, Georgia arranged the singer’s funeral and cared for his body from his 25 December (06) death up until its March (07) burial at Brown’s daughter, Deanna Brown Thomas, home in Beech Island.

Charles Reid, manager of the funeral home, says, “I’m just waiting on them to get some of this mess straightened out. I really haven’t pushed the issue, even though I’d like to have my money.”

Buddy Dallas, Brown’s adviser and trustee of his estate, responds, “It was the children that ran up a funeral bill of over $150,000, not the trustees. (more…)

Just a hot mess.

Two of the most rememberable moments at two funerals I attended years ago:

-A piano player who could not play—literally! It would have been better to have a cat run up and down the piano while chasing a mouse.
-Someone walking around with a briefcase handcuffed to their wrist. To this day we never understood the reason behind that.

What are your rememberable funeral moments?

“Man, take that wing out of your mouth and let’s loose some weight!”

The 50 Million Pound Challenge

The following is from the website (click here):

Joining THE 50 MILLION POUND CHALLENGE means becoming part of something exciting, life-altering, historic, and tremendously beneficial! Not only for you, but to others in your family and community, as well as to future generations of African Americans.

Why Join?

Participating in The Challenge is not just about shedding those extra pounds — though that is critical to your health and well-being.
It’s about all of us coming together and looking out for each other as we work to take more control of our lives. It’s about taking the time to reach out and lock hands as we join forces to fight the very real risk that being overweight poses to ourselves, our families, and our community.

The Crisis

The number one health crisis facing not only African Americans, but all Americans, is being overweight. Two out of every three adults (66%) today are considered to be overweight, or even worse, obese. Even more troubling, 17% of all children in the U.S. are now overweight. The statistics for African Americans are even more alarming—where almost 80% of adult women and 67% of adult men are overweight. Equally worrisome is that 20% of African-American teenagers between the ages 12-19 are overweight, and this number appears to be rising.

Our teenagers are developing Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and in some cases, early signs of heart disease. This decline in our youths’ health can be attributed to poor diet, lack of exercise, and inadequate medical guidance.

What We Can Do

The very good news is that we have the ability to reverse these unhealthy trends! For many of us it’s not just a matter of fitting into a smaller size, but a matter of life and death! THE CHALLENGE can do so much, not just for our physical health, but for our minds and spirit too. Below are just a few of the many things I hope we’ll accomplish together.

* Shed those excess pounds, achieve healthier weights, and reduce our risk for life-threatening diseases.
* Unite as a community and pool our strength and resources to overcome the health problems that afflict us.
* Learn more about our bodies and what we can do to live healthier, longer lives.
* Teach our youth the importance of making healthy lifestyle decisions that will benefit them for years to come.

Yours in The Challenge,
Ian K. Smith, M.D.

Man, I am totally on board with this. This is my first time hearing about this (I think). The good news for me is since the beginning of March of this year, I have been on a diet. Since that time I have lost 16 pounds with about 16 to go. The key for my weight loss has been DAILY exercise. Also, I have greatly reduced my intake of bad carbs (white bread, white rice and other processed foods) and increased produce consumption. My goal is to get down to the size I was at my wedding (still trying to impress ol’ girl :) —and she is )

What inspired me to do this was that while on a dentist visit, they noticed that my blood pressure was a bit high (mind you, part of that was because I was anxious about my dentist visit and the other part was because of weight). When they told me that my reading was 150 over something, I got really scared. So much so that as soon as I got home, I told my wife that I was going on a diet. Recently when I took my blood pressure, it was about 112 over 76 (roughly).

I say all of that because I am so tired of hearing about folks dying from the results of obesity. Man, I have a wife to love, children to raise and a world to explore.

I’m not trying to go out like that!
