Just too funny!

(AP) “Kennyi Aouad, 11, of Terre Haute, Ind., became a crowd favorite after he couldn’t stop laughing when he was given the funky-sounding word “Sardoodledom” (a melodramatic plot). He finally composed himself and asked all sorts of questions about the word — definition, part of speech, alternate pronunciations, use in a sentence — then tried to get an unallowable hint by asking: “Is it kind of like kingdom?” He could hardly believe it when he spelled the word correctly.” (source)

Church brings economic revial to local community

May 31st, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized
(chicagotribune.com) The front side of the Forest Park Mall could belong to any shopping center on Roosevelt Road. Behind a stucco facade, customers hunt for groceries at Ultra Foods, shower curtains at Kmart, phones at a US Cellular store.

But enter the mall and follow the beat of a gospel band, and you’ll find yourself in a 3,500-seat sanctuary where worshipers from the Living Word Christian Center are clapping and singing hallelujahs. Rev. Bill Winston preaches while cameras project his image on giant video screens.

This is the landlord’s side of the building.

Combining Bible and business acumen, Living Word has transformed what was once an eyesore listed on a Web site called Deadmalls.com into a thriving if unusual hybrid: half mega-church, half shopping mall.

Since the nondenominational church bought the dying mall in 1998, Living Word has more than doubled to 15,000 members while creating a facility divided between a state-of-the-art worship center and the church’s commercial subsidiary at 7600 W. Roosevelt Rd.

Both sides of the mall speak to the church’s mission: not only saving souls, but also modeling economic development for a largely black congregation. Living Word has established a business school, a broadcast media center, a Christian bookstore, a kindergarten-through-8th-grade academy and its own clothing stores selling business apparel.

The church-owned Forest Park Plaza Inc., which runs the mall, has built a new facade for the building and earns rent from tenants like Kmart and Old Country Buffet.

You know that Old Country Buffet had to be in the mix! :) The article continues…

The revival has had a spinoff effect. Winston says the mall sustains 400 jobs and creates $100 million a year in taxable income, a figure Calderone says sounds about right.

Living Word is trying to replicate its mall-church at a 12-acre shopping center it bought in 2005 in Winston’s hometown of Tuskegee, Ala. And his ambitions go even further. The church has raised nearly $5 million in its attempt to buy a bank, and it is planning to start a military academy.

A new water-bottling plant, which will double as a teaching model for students at the business school, is expected to be running this summer. Winston is chairman of the bank and is listed as principal in most of the church’s enterprises. (more…)

If you are gonna do megachurch, this is the way to do it.

Top-Grossing Black-Owned Companies (Black Enterprise)

May 31st, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized
NEW YORK, May 29 /PRNewswire/ — BLACK ENTERPRISE (BE) today announced the nation’s top-grossing black-owned businesses as listed in the publication’s 35th annual BE 100s report. The cornerstone of the publication’s June issue, this comprehensive analysis includes a total of 275 businesses: 100 industrial/service companies, 100 auto dealerships, 60 financial services firms, and 15 advertising agencies.

When BE first compiled its top 100 in 1973, combined sales for the 100 component companies totaled $473 million. Today, the top 100 African American industrial/service companies and 100 leading auto dealers — the core of the BE 100s report — collectively grossed more than $27 billion. As the BE 100s list marks its 35th anniversary, the nation’s most profitable black-owned businesses collectively responded to a more challenging and competitive business environment by aggressively working toward the expansion of revenue base and markets. Companies that found success did this by implementing a new blueprint for growth, including recruiting powerhouse management teams, forming strategic partnerships, strengthening their black business networks, and developing a global focus.

As a result, several companies reached new milestones. World Wide Technology Inc., No. 1 on the BE INDUSTRIAL/SERVICE 100 list, continues its prominence as the nation’s top-grossing black-owned business. This year the Maryland Heights, Missouri-based reseller of IT products and services becomes the first company to surpass the $2 billion sales mark since TLC Beatrice International Holdings Inc. did so in 1996. In addition, two other companies exceeded $1 billion in revenues. CAMAC International Corp., a Houston-based crude oil, gas exploration, and production and trading company reported sales of $1.6 billion. CAMAC ranks No. 2 on the BE INDUSTRIAL SERVICE 100 for the fourth consecutive year. Led by CEO Gregory Jackson, Prestige Automotive reported total sales $1.5 billon, making it No. 1 on the BE AUTO DEALERS 100. Located in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, Prestige continues to thrive despite Detroit’s downturn, posting outstanding sales of Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, GM, Saturn, and Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

BE 100s companies tied closely to the automotive market had perhaps the most difficult year. Shifts in consumer demands away from sport utility vehicles sent U.S. automakers reeling along with their contractors. Faring somewhat better were companies in the quick-serve restaurant industry. While S&P’s fundamental outlook remained neutral at the end of March, the firm expects consumers to continue dining out as a result of a higher percentage of Americans working, particularly women.

Top-grossing companies on additional BE 100s lists include the following: (click here to read more…)

BET trying to find its place

May 31st, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized
(wilmingtonstar.com) Despite being the first and certainly the largest African-American cable channel, BET has developed few of its own marketable stars and virtually no breakout programs. It relies instead on reruns, movies and music videos for the bulk of its lineup.

BET’s chief executive, Debra L. Lee, has tried to reverse that trend, this year increasing the channel’s production budget 50 percent and plunging into original programming with 16 new shows planned for the new season.

“What we have found over the years is that acquired and licensed programming has not done as well as we would have liked,” Ms. Lee said. “It was very clear that we had to invest more in original programming.”

Ms. Lee joined BET in 1986 as general counsel and vice president, working closely with its founder, Robert L. Johnson. She was named president and chief executive when he left the network in 2005. Although she did not have direct programming experience, the programming department had reported to her since 1995. A calm, businesslike executive, she quickly brought in a team to “take BET to the next level,” she said in a recent interview at Viacom’s Manhattan headquarters, where she commutes from BET’s Washington offices.

Ms. Lee’s attempts to remake BET come at time when all cable channels are contending with an increasingly tough landscape as the battle for market share among the mature networks intensifies. BET’s ratings were strong in 2006 but tumbled in the first quarter of this year.

And while the channel has had some success with original series like “American Gangster” and “Lil’ Kim: Countdown to Lockdown,” they have been overshadowed by some recent hits on other Viacom cable channels. These include Comedy Central’s “Chappelle’s Show” and VH1’s “Flavor of Love” and two spinoffs: “I Love New York” and “Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School.”

[…]

According to a 2005 Nielsen study, African-Americans watch more television on average than the overall population. That appetite for television raises the question of why BET’s ratings are not higher.

“BET does not have the ratings it should have with 12 percent of the audience being black,” said Leo Hindery, a partner in Intermedia Partners, which owns a majority stake in the Gospel Channel, a cable network. “It has never developed a soul of its own. I would do more sports than they are doing and I would stay with the youth audience.”(more…)

My unsolicited opinion: BET will dissolve to a weekly segment on MTV. “The Black Hour” or something of that nature.

Black-owned fims find success in the Rockies

May 31st, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized
(denver.yourhub.com) DENVER–The Rocky Mountain Region is growing, and the opportunities were never better for Colorado’s black-owned business owners and professionals. From Denver International Airport to the Fitzsimons Health Sciences City, from Highway 36 to E-470, local business opportunities abound for African Americans.

According to the US Small Business Administration, the number of Black-owned firms in Colorado grew by 43 percent between 1997 and 2002–generating millions in revenues and creating thousands of new jobs for the state’s residents.

It helps that the Aurora-Denver metro area remains a viable and attractive location for businesses to grow and/or relocate. The region’s business-friendly environment–with its relatively low tax rate, easy access to capital and a tremendous network of public and private resources for budding entrepreneurs and professionals–consistently places the region on the short-list for firms looking for a change of scenery accompanied by new revenue streams.

It helps, too, that the metro area has some of the nation’s largest redevelopment projects underway. One need look no further the 578-acre Fitzsimons Medical Campus, home to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Center and The Children’s Hospital, and future home of a new Veteran’s Administration Hospital.

[…]

Unfortunately, African-American and other minority business owners aren’t always informed of the magnitude and possibility of the region’s business climate.

That’s why they’ll want to attend the 3 rd Annual Black Economic Summit, set for June 7-8 at the Colorado Convention Center. Themed Reach for New Altitude, the Mountain Region Black Economic Summit is perfect for young and future professionals on their climb upward, entrepreneurs hoping to land investors or new customers and others seeking a new career opportunity. Man, this article brought back some memories of my days in the Rocky mountain state. Great investment opportunities out there for those who are willing to make the jump to this part of the country.

More circling of the wagons

Here is a piece I came across that attempts “explain” the whole snitching thing. Here is part of it, but please read the rest in your free time.

Black Press Slaps 60 Minutes On Snitchin’ Bias: “Sloppy Journalism”
By Edrea Davis
May 27, 2007

For the past few months, mainstream media has hyped the “stop snitchin” slogan, giving it a life – and definition – of it’s own. A recent story on CBS News’ 60 Minutes presented a one-dimensional view of snitching that appears to be part of an ongoing propaganda campaign designed to hold hip-hop culture accountable for the dysfunctional criminal justice system, and divert the public’s attention from the real problems in America.

Whether it’s propaganda, pimping, or simply sloppy journalism, the story “Stop Snitchin” was biased and inaccurate. A cursory review of the facts reinforces the urgent need to resurrect the black press as an authentic voice and trustworthy news source capable of dispelling the latest stereotypes.

In the black community it is commonly understood that a snitch is a crafty criminal who negotiates a deal for himself by telling on others. Since the days of slavery, providing information to authorities to gain favor has been viewed negatively. Judas would be considered a snitch primarily because he was one of the disciples, one of the crew.

But, according to the 60 Minutes story, witnesses and concerned citizens are now considered snitches. The report indicated that people of all ages in the black community, even children, are abiding by this so-called code-of-silence out of fear of retaliation. A related story, “A Conspiracy Of Silence, CBS News Investigates: Epidemic Of Witness Intimidation Plagues Justice System” aired a week after the “Stop Snitchin” show.

While it is true that blacks and other minorities have a history of strained relationships with the police, concerned citizens routinely complain about crack houses, slow response times and a lack of police patrols in inner-city neighborhoods. Black people also serve as witnesses and jurors. (more…)

While it is very true that Black folks do actively participate in working with the police, what we do have is a dual relationship with law enforcement. Within communities with very high crime rates is the reality that if you drop the dime on criminal activity, the “streets” will deal with you. Davis is doing nothing more than circling the wagons here simply because “White” media supposedly got it wrong. No mention in the article of the lack of outrage for years within Black media regarding Black folks within these communities who do live in fear because of the unwritten code of snitching. The Long Beach, CA beating case involving a group of Black youths brutally beating 3 White girls is a case I have talked about in the past on this site. If Davis is so concerned about “properly” defining snitching, perhaps this case would shed some light on what happens when folks speak out against crime in these types of communities.

LONG BEACH - A witness to an attack that saw a group of black youths beat three young white women on Halloween in Bixby Knolls described the brutal event in graphic detail Wednesday, a day in which police and the prosecutor said that the witness had already become a victim of intimidation.

[…]

We had to have a police escort bring her to court today,” Boss said.

Cmdr. Jeff Johnson, who leads the Long Beach Police Department’s Juvenile Services Division, said the 18-year-old witness, who is black, was trying to leave her home Wednesday morning when she peered out one window and saw six black men who appeared to be gang members sitting on her car waiting for her.

Afraid for her life, she called police, who gave her an escort to court, the commander said.

“She definitely felt they were waiting there for her and that she was in danger,” Johnson said outside of the courtroom.

Boss asked Judge Gibson Lee to remind the 10 minors charged with the attack and everyone else in the courtroom that it is illegal to intimidate a witness. (click here to read the rest of the article and for all the info on this case)

Bottom line, instead of circling the wagons here by fretting over “White” media perception, Davis would have done better by exposing the realities of those who face intimidation for doing the right thing.

Yet they keep coming

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Many here south of the border reveled in her disastrous evening: First Miss USA Rachel Smith slipped and fell on her bottom during the Miss Universe evening gown competition. Then she was booed by hundreds in the Mexican audience.

The treatment of the Tennessee beauty queen was nothing personal. It had more to do with Mexico’s sometimes tense relationship with its powerful northern neighbor.

U.S. athletes have sparked a similar response. In 2005, when the U.S. played Mexico during a World Cup soccer qualifier, the crowd booed the U.S. national anthem and a smattering of fans chanted “Osama! Osama!” during the game.

Smith was booed repeatedly during her stay in Mexico, including last week, when she carried a guitar and wore an Elvis-style suit during a parade of national costumes held in downtown Mexico City.

She kept her poise during an interview Monday night with pageant judges, despite the boos and chants of “Mexico! Mexico!” that drowned out her answer. (more…)

This is just too funny yet sad at the same time. On one hand these folks are disrespecting the US in this manner, yet on the other hand they are begging “el enfermera” or the nurse/nanny of the north to do what their own government refuses to do.

Please, don’t get me started with this one!

(chicagotribune.com) D’Angelo Gardner didn’t like it when staff members at Urban Prep Charter Academy for Young Men started telling him to tuck in his shirt, pull up his pants, straighten his tie.

He didn’t like the unfamiliar feeling of having a black man telling him what to do at all. His father had died of a heroin overdose when he was 9. His mother, raising three children on her own, hoped that the new charter school in West Englewood could teach her son how to be a man.

“Please pick my son. We need you,” Angela Russell scribbled several times in the margins of his school application.

Urban Prep, Chicago’s only public all-boys high school, opened last fall against the backdrop of nationwide concern over the widening achievement gap between African-American boys and other students. On the first day of school, the average freshman at Urban Prep was reading at a 6th-grade level.

Mininum Wage Fraud — Craig Chamberlain

May 28th, 2007 | 1 Comment | Posted in Uncategorized
(theconservativevoice.com) Congress, desperate to actually accomplish something, managed to get the mininum wage raised to 7.25 an hour, and they only managed that by tying it in with funding for the Iraq war. Too bad an increase will not help anyone, and will probably cost a lot of mininum wage earners their jobs.

Now I suppose that there are some people who truly and honestly think that increasing the mininum wage will help those making it. They might be moved by compassion because of the story they see on the six o’clock news where the news station manages to dig up the three people in town who have to support a family on the mininum wage. For most people, however, supporting a mininum wage increase is either political opportunism, economic illiteracy, or a desire to spread class warfare. Sometimes it’s all three.

Labor, like anything else a business has to spend money on, is a cost. When a cost goes up in one area that business must offset it either by raising prices, and thus passing the burden of this wage increase onto the consumer, or by cutting the costs that have gone up. In this case that is labor. By cutting labor people will be laid off, and fewer people will be hired.

The bad economics behind the wage increase does not stop Congress from being proud of it. Ted Kennedy said the achievement was one of “the proudest of this new Congress.” What’s that say about Congress when they are more proud of a pay raise that will cost people jobs than they are by, say, funding the troops?

The left leaning Economic Policy Institute estimates that 5.6 million people, which is about 4% of the workforce, earn less than 7.25 and hour, the new mininum wage. Now if only 4% of American workers in the mininum wage that would mean that the other 96% earn more than that. But to hear Congress you would think that they just saved the American economy. (more…)

AIDS cases increase in Dane county, WI

May 28th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized
(channel3000.com) MADISON, Wis. — The number of HIV-AIDS cases is on the rise in Dane County, according to local health officials.

Dane County public health officials said that gay men and blacks are two segments of the population where they are seeing significant increases in HIV and AIDS cases, WISC-TV reported.

“Some people may think it’s not that big of a deal anymore,” said Cheryl Robinson, a public health program manager.

Robinson said that this idea is wrong.

In 2006, 64 new cases were reported to public health — 28 were among gay men and 13 were among blacks. The age group of 25 to 44 year olds made up 51 percent of the cases reported, according to health officials.

“This is a virus,” said MATEC site director Marge Sutinen. “It doesn’t matter if you are gay or straight, young or old, black or white, rich or poor. All that matters is that you are human and it wants to get in and set up shop with you.”

[…]

“It’s a public health issue that I don’t think a lot of people understand,” said AYO co-founder Rebecca Kendziorski. “It’s over there, somewhere else, but it affects all of us.” (more…)

No it doesn’t!

(enter in the fear of appearing “too judgmental”)

While AIDS does affect many people in our country and around the world, the truth is that it not all people are “affected” by it. One of the big problems that I have with the AIDS movement is that in order to win sympathy from the public on this issue, it has to be worded as “everybody’s problem”. Only those who A. Practice risky sexual behavior after being warned by multiple sources (the MAJORITY of AIDS cases out there–here in the US), B. Rape, C. Those who unfortunately contracted it by tainted blood transfusion, or D. Those who are born with it and their friends/family members are affected. While I do have great sympathy for anyone with this disease, my concern tend to be greater for B - D.

All moved in and unpacking

May 27th, 2007 | 1 Comment | Posted in Uncategorized

Whew! This weekend was spent loading and unloading a moving truck. All that is left is to clean up the ol’ apartment and spend the next few days unpacking. After spending 6+ years renting, all the aches and pains I am feeling right now is well worth it.

Needless to say that my Internet connection will not be active until Wednesday, so posting will once again be a bit spotty until then. In the meantime, I will be nailing down a date for my next podcast (which will be on the topic of health).

To all my old and new readers, thank you for taking the time to check out BlackInformant.com. It really means a whole lot to me and I will continue to work to make it your worthwhile for your continued readership.

Affirmative-action workaround: Holistic approach

May 25th, 2007 | 4 Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

Some background:

(newsroom.ucla.edu) Prior to the enactment of Proposition 209, which banned the use of race, ethnicity and gender in admissions, UCLA had the highest number of African American freshmen admitted in the UC system. For fall 1995, when UCLA was still allowed to use affirmative action, 1,450 African American students applied, the campus admitted 693 African American applicants and 289 expressed their intent to enroll. Following the passage of Proposition 209, which went into effect for fall 1998, admissions numbers for African Americans declined significantly at UCLA and other UC campuses, including UC Berkeley.

In November 2001, the UC Regents adopted the comprehensive-review admissions policy for freshman admissions, effective for fall 2002. The policy was designed to provide equitable treatment of all students. Under the policy, UCLA, like other UC campuses, considers academics, personal achievements and life challenges in evaluating applicants.

Prompted in part by last year’s severe decline in the number of African American students admitted to the freshman class, the UCLA faculty accelerated its review of UCLA’s process for implementing comprehensive review and decided to adopt the holistic process in use at UC Berkeley and many Ivy League institutions, beginning with the fall 2007 freshman class. The UCLA Academic Senate made the change because the faculty believed a more individualized and qualitative assessment of each applicant’s entire application would better achieve the goals of comprehensive review. Under the holistic model, each application is now read and considered in its entirety by two trained readers; in previous years, two readers reviewed student academic records while a third reviewed life challenges and other achievements. In addition, the holistic approach emphasizes student achievements in the context of opportunities available and how students have maximized these opportunities. (more…)

Here is a recent update on UCLA’s “holistic” approach”.

(dailybruin.ucla.edu) When UCLA announced its decision last year to adopt a holistic admissions process, some expressed hope that the new system would help increase the number of underrepresented minorities admitted to the university.

Officials said at the time that holistic review was intended to make admissions more fair by placing more emphasis on students’ personal qualities and achievements.

And while the number of underrepresented minorities admitted did increase overall, there is still a significant gap between the SAT scores and high school GPAs of black and Latino students compared to white and Asian students.
The persisting gap left some questioning whether the switch to holistic review had really improved UCLA’s admissions process.

In fall 2006, before UCLA switched to holistic admissions, black and Latino applicants’ average SAT scores were 255 and 246 points lower than the average for their white and Asian counterparts.

That gap seemed largely unaffected by holistic review – in fall 2007, black applicants’ SAT scores were on average 293 points lower than those of white and Asian students, and Latino applicants’ scores came up 249 points short.

Applicants’ GPAs told a similar story. In both fall 2006 and fall 2007, black students’ GPAs were about two-10ths of a point lower than white and Asian students’, and Latino students’ were about one-10th lower.

[…]

…admit rates for minority students from lower-performing high schools did increase after the implementation of holistic admissions.

High schools in California are rated according to the Academic Performance Index, a 10-point scale with higher scores awarded to higher-performing schools.

From fall 2006 to fall 2007, the admit rate for black students coming from high schools with API scores of 1 or 2 jumped from 12 percent to 27 percent.

The rate for Latino applicants from these schools rose from 25 to 27 percent in the same time frame.

[…]

But at the same time, the admit rates for white and Asian students from low-performing high schools fell.

In fall 2006, 35 percent of Asian students and 41 percent of white students from California high schools with API scores of 1 or 2 were admitted to UCLA.

In fall 2007, those numbers dropped to 31 percent and 33 percent, respectively.

[…]

(Ward) Connerly said he was not surprised by the latest admissions figures.

“I’ve had my suspicions that UCLA was going to try and find a proxy for race to get the pressure off their backs,” he said. “As you look at the underperforming schools in California, … Asian kids are going to those schools to almost the same extent as black kids are.”

(source)

I think that these two articles speak for themselves. The first one boasts of how lowering standards for certain individuals will create a happy rainbow campus that reflects the ethnic demographic of California. The second exposes the academic reality of creating that rainbow.

In short, it is not the job of colleges to make amends for failing public schools and/or low parental involvement for kids going to these schools. Again, our history is full of examples of Black kids who were not only able to excel in a failing school district, but were able to demonstrate their ability to be admitted into colleges and universities based on academic performance alone. Anything that resembles affirmative action waters down those inspiring achievements.

Folks who are fired up about the possibility that millions of illegals will be given the green light to stay here in the US–replacing legal employees who been in their position for years yet are pro-affirmative action should take note. Both of these ideologies stem from the same root.

Is Sallie Mae outta here?

May 24th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

NEW YORK (Fortune) — Supposedly, the departure of Sallie Mae CEO Tim Fitzpatrick, which was announced Tuesday, is a way for the embattled student loan giant to improve its image in Congress. This is critical, because both Democrats and President Bush want to slash the rich subsidies that student lenders, including Sallie Mae (Charts, Fortune 500), receive. That’s obviously not in Sallie’s best interest, particularly given Sallie’s pending $25 billion buyout, led by private equity firm JC Flowers.

Fitzpatrick’s departure may be a public way to placate critics, but behind the scenes, Sallie is doing exactly what Sallie always does, which is to lobby. And right now, Sallie’s lobbying involves a particularly unpleasant form of racial politics. While Sallie has suffered a setback, the battle is far from over.

The budget reconciliation instructions released by the House Budget Committee last week include a provision that mandates $750 million of savings from the Education and Labor Committee over five years. The word in Washington is that Democrats plan to use that procedural vehicle possibly to force more radical reform. Theoretically, Congress could arrive at the $750 million figure by cutting $20 billion in subsidies to lenders, and spending $19.25 billion to reduce the interest rates students pay. As part of that, Congress could make a renewed push for the government’s direct loan program, which provides loans directly to students, bypassing private lenders.

Not surprisingly, Sallie doesn’t want this to happen. So Sallie has been reaching out to members of the Congressional Black Caucus, implying that a decrease in its subsidies will mean that the company will be forced to cut back on loans to students who attend historically black colleges and universities. If you are one of the few out there who is holding your breath for a reaction to see if the same folks who have been raising hell about Korans allegedly being flushed down the toilet in Guantanamo Bay to this latest development–breath! Found via Drudgereport.com, here are just two of many pictures found in a “how-to” guide for torture located somewhere in Iraq.

MAY 24–In a recent raid on an al-Qaeda safe house in Iraq, U.S. military officials recovered an assortment of crude drawings depicting torture methods like “blowtorch to the skin” and “eye removal.” Along with the images, which you’ll find on the following pages, soldiers seized various torture implements, like meat cleavers, whips, and wire cutters.

Are you an “expert”?

May 24th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

(blacknews.com) Columbus, OH - Finding a Black expert can be difficult, which is part of the reason why you always see the same Black people (Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, T.D. Jakes, etc.) being interviewed on the news and speaking at various conferences.

However, Diversity City Media, an 8-year old multicultural marketing and public relations firm, is seeking to change that. The company recently launched BlackExperts.com - a FREE online directory of African American speakers and experts.

The site allows individuals to profile themselves in front of journalists, radio/TV producers, meeting planners, etc. who may be interested in using them for media interviews or paid speaking engagements.

Dante Lee, CEO of Diversity City Media, comments “There are thousands of African Americans out there with expertise. BlackExperts.com gives them the needed exposure to be considered for media and speaking opportunities.”

Lee continues, “BlackExperts.com is not another speakers bureau, it’s more like a Yellow Pages full of Black people who know what they’re talking about.” (source)
